| When do I use this search?
If you prefer Boolean logic as a searching method or would like to narrow your searching, use these steps in NoveList.
Scenario
A patron would like a list of mysteries or suspense stories written by British authors.
Here's How in NoveList:
-
From the home page, click on the "Search Our Database" tab.
- Select a search strategy — "Boolean Search" in this case — by clicking on its link.
- In the find box, enter mystery stories, english and use the adjacent drop down menu to select what field you want searched for that word. For our scenario, subject is selected because we want to search subject headings to find mysteries by English writers.
Note that in NoveList, title records display subject headings in this format:
genre, nationality [of author]
Examples include:
science fiction, american
mystery stories, irish
suspense stories, english
love stories, french
- Just under "Find," change the Boolean drop down menu to OR, change the next drop down menu from "Author" to "Subject" and then type in suspense stories, english. Set any desired limiters (reading level, publication date, etc.) and click the “Search” button to perform the search.
What You See (the search results):
NoveList displays a list of books whose title records satisfy your search criteria.
