These features (saving personal lists, saving searches and creating alerts) can be very powerful in a school setting:
- In the fourth grade, students learn about the concept of genre through the study of science fiction. A school media librarian could set up an alert for her fourth grade teachers that lets them learn about new science fiction titles that are suitable for this grade level (by using Lexile scores).
- An art teacher enjoys using picture books to teach students about a variety of media (watercolor, collage, gauche). It took a long time to find picture books that used all of these techniques. With NoveList's new save a search feature, the school media coordinator can quickly call up her saved searches that identify these titles. She can also encourage the art teacher to set up her own profile so that she can keep a running list of picture books that worked well in her classroom.
- A social studies teacher likes for his students to read novels about certain historical events or periods. Each of his students has to select a particular period, event or historical figure in United States history and read a novel about that period, event or figure. Each student must locate at least three titles on their topic and discuss the reasons for their selection. The school media coordinator is familiar with this assignment and has saved several searches that yield multiple titles for these students.
- A reluctant reader has become very excited about reading books that deal with the topic of survival. His teacher showed him how to set up a personal list of the titles that are of interest to him. He can print or e-mail the list as well as add or delete titles as he finds new books of interest. This lets this "newly engaged" reader control an aspect of his reading environment.
