Personal Lists in NoveList

When Do You Use This feature?
When you are searching the database, you may perform several searches and want to keep lists of some the titles that are most interesting to you. At the search results page, each title has a small folder and a link under the folder. When you click on this link, the corresponding title is added to a list. If you click on several Add links, each title is added to the list.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS LIST IS IN TEMPORARY MEMORY AND WILL BE LOST WHEN YOU END THIS SESSION OF NOVELIST UNLESS YOU SAVE THE LIST. You can save one or many different lists, based on your needs. In order to save your lists, you must be signed in to My NoveList.

Scenario
After running a search in NoveList to find mysteries by British authors, Sue sorts her search results by popularity and decides she would like to create a list of the most popular British mysteries to refer to later. (For the purpose of this demonstration, only three titles are added to the list but you can add up to 200 titles to a list.)

How do you save a list?

  1. After you have added your books by selecting the "Add" link next to any book you want to put in the list, click on the "View Lists" link. [Show me a picture]
  2. Clicking the View Lists link will bring you to the VIEW LIST page. This page provides you with the list of all the books that you "added" to the list. In the shaded area, it also indicates that this is an unsaved list. [Show me a picture]

Just below the "View List" heading, there is a sentence that says:

"To save this list, create new lists, or view previously saved lists, Sign in to My NoveList"

(Note that this will not display IF you have previously signed into My NoveList earlier in the session.)

You must click this link and log into My NoveList in order to save any list in NoveList. NoveList cannot assign names to lists unless it has a name (user name) to associate with the named list. When you select this link, you will be asked to enter your user name and password. If you have never logged in before, you can create a login by selecting that link. When you have logged in (or created a log in), select the "Continue" button in the upper corner of the page and it will return you to the VIEW LIST page that you were previously at.

  1. The VIEW LIST page will now look different after you have logged in. Under VIEW LIST, you will see a link for View My Saved Lists and then you will see two drop down boxes with defaults in them that say:

"Move Selected Items" To "New List"

with a SUBMIT button next to it. These did not show up UNTIL you logged into My NoveList. [Show me a picture]

  1. Select the titles that you want to move to the new list by clicking on the boxes to the left of the titles (or click on the "Select All" button). Then click the SUBMIT button. You will then be taken to a page to give a name to the list. After you name the list, click the SUBMIT button again and your list is saved.

Using the Drop Down Boxes When Saving Lists

"Move Selected Items" is a drop down box because we also give you to option to copy rather than move items into a list. We have some librarians that have a list of books but have multiple lists, and would like to copy some of the titles into one list and then copy some of the titles into a different list. Most people, however, will be moving items to a list so that is the default.

Likewise, the default for the second drop down is New List because it is assumed that you want to create a new list. However, after you have created at least one list, the drop down here will show not only New List, but all of the other lists that you have created. This allows you to add titles to existing lists at later times.
