Wildcards in NoveList

When Do I Use This feature?

Sometimes you cannot remember the exact word that appears in a title or want to search for a group of words that share a common root. Wildcards allow you to enter a symbol (*) to search for portions of a word. Wildcards can be used with NoveList's Find an Author, Find a Title, Find a Series Name, and Boolean Search features.

The wildcard in NoveList is represented by an asterisk (*). To use this wildcard, enter the root of a search term and replace the ending with an *. NoveList finds all forms of that word.

Examples:

  • Wildcards are helpful when you cannot remember the exact spelling of an author's name. Enter "Tolk*" in the Find a Favorite Author search to retrieve a list of books by J. R. R. Tolkien.

  • Hard-to-spell title words can be truncated in a search, too. Enter "Rapun*" in Find a Favorite Title search to retrieve a list of books of the well-known fairy tale, "Rapunzel."

  • A reader who is interested in books about fifth graders, fifth grade boys or fifth grade girls can enter "fifth grade*" in a Boolean search to retrieve title records that contain any of these words.
  • A reader who is interested in books about politics, politicians or political literature could enter "politic*" to retrieve title records that contain any of these words.
