Using the Guided Boolean Search to Find New Books to Read
When do I use this
search?
If you prefer Boolean logic as a searching method or would like to narrow your searching, use these steps in NoveList.
Scenario
A patron would like a list of some of the most popular mysteries written in 2004.
Here's How in NoveList:
-
From the home page, click on the "Search Our Database " tab.
- Select a search strategy - "Boolean Search" in this case - by clicking on its link as in the picture above.
Enter a descriptive word in the find box - mystery for our scenario - and use the adjacent drop down menu (graphic) to select the field you want searched for that word. For our scenario, Subject is selected because we want to search subject headings to find mysteries.
- Set any desired limiters (reading level, publication date, etc.). For this scenario, we selected Adult level and entered a publication date range of 2004 to 2004 to retrieve only mysteries (for adults) published in 2004. [Show me a picture]. Click the "Search" button.
What You See (the
search results):
NoveList displays a list of books whose title records satisfy your search criteria. [Show me a picture] However, this list contains over 300 titles of mysteries published just in 2004. In order to help your patron find "the most popular" titles, re-sort the list by choosing "Popularity" from the "Sort by" drop-down menu at the top of the search results page. [Show me a picture]
- View the re-sorted list. Popularity rankings are given to the titles that have sold the most in libraries and book stores across the country. [Show me a picture of the re-sorted list]
NOTE: This step-by-step example of a Boolean search is an overview. More in-depth information about Boolean searching is available in the Optimizing NoveList section of the Training & Support Center. |
