Browsing Best Fiction to Find Titles Listed by Award

What is Best Fiction?

Best Fiction links you to hundreds of award lists organized by level (adult, young adult, children's, easy) and by type of award (literary, mystery, science fiction, fantasy, romance, etc.). Many of the awards are national but we also include state specific awards and Canadian awards.

These lists are pre-made and updated monthly.

Browsing Explore Fiction to Find Titles by Genre or Topic

What is Explore Fiction?

Clicking the Explore Fiction link provides over 1200 customized lists of books based on genre (mysteries, science fiction, westerns) or special categories by level (boys and girls, periods in history, contemporary). Each genre or topic has a number of sub-genres. By clicking on the links/icons of interest, users can find lists of books grouped by genre or topic. A description appears at the end of each list that tells you something about the books on the list or how to find more books like the ones on the list.

Lists are organized by level so you must select a level before you begin to browse the list. The levels are adult (19 years and above), young adult (recommended for ages 13-19), children's (typically chapter books or books appropriate for ages 8-12) or easy (typically picture books or books appropriate for ages 0-7). Because these are pre-made lists, you cannot select more than one level at a time.

Browsing All Authors, Titles, Series Names or Subjects to Find these Lists Used in NoveList

What are these lists?

This feature allows users to look up, view, or browse through the list of all authors, titles, series, or subject headings used in NoveList in two ways; alphabetically or relevancy ranked. You select whether to view the lists alphabetically or relevancy ranked and you select which type of list you want to view (authors, titles, series names, or subject headings).

Note: When you select the above link, you will find examples and tips for using these lists. Please review these tips.

Alphabetic Lists: This search allows you to enter an initial letter, part of a word, or a complete word and NoveList will jump to that point in the alphabetical list. Because the lists are so long (remember that there are over 100,000 titles and 36,000 subject headings in NoveList), you need to type in enough of the word to narrow the section of the list you are jumping to.

Relevancy Ranked Lists: This search allows you to enter one or more complete words and NoveList will retrieve a sorted list with the best matches to your entry at the top of the list. This feature is especially powerful for those of you who like to fine-tune your use of subject headings when using Describe a Plot or Boolean Searches. See examples below.

These lists can be accessed in two different locations:

Browse Lists Tab: At the Browse Lists tab, just under Explore Fiction, there is a link that takes you to a page where you can access all of the lists.

Search Pages: At each of the search pages (Author Search, Title Search, Series Search, Describe a Plot Search) just below the SEARCH button, you can access the specific list for the type of search at the line that says, "To browse a list of all authors (or titles, etc), click here" and this will allow you to access the specific list for the search page you are at.
